Recent Ty Cobb Sales

Several Ty Cobb cards sold on eBay this past week:

A Ty Cobb red portrait, Polar Bear, PSA 1 sold this past week for $679.

The same night, a Ty Cobb bat off shoulder, Polar Bear, PSA 2 sold for $1,012.

I bought neither one.

Classic Confrontation: Cobb vs. Wagner

The two most famous and sought after T-206 player cards are Honus Wagner and Ty Cobb. Which one is more iconic to the set?

Joe Orlando, editor of the Sports Market Report, takes a stab at deciding which player is tops. His conclusion:

"The bottom line is that they are both topflight cards featuring special players, with interesting stories behind each historic collectible. To me, the point here isn't to diminish the status of the Wagner by any means. I just think an even greater appreciation of the Cobb is justified. I really think it's one to watch in the coming years."

New T-206 Collection Submitted for Grading

A few weeks ago, a large collection of 366 T-206 cards was submitted to PSA for grading. The cards were located in Massachusetts and include three Cobbs, Youngs and Matthewsons. The collection also has two Walter Johnsons and even a rare Eddie Plank.

After grading, they will be auctioned off.

"the cards originated with older brother of a woman who was a long-time friend of a family there.  He passed way in the 1960s.  They were passed down again when the woman died in 1990 and the current owner, a 51-year-old local pharmacist, has held them since then. For many years, they had been stored inside an old manila envelope stuck inside a large hat box."

 Wow.
